India, along with its Quad partners—the United States, Australia, and Japan—has pledged over USD 20 million in humanitarian aid to support Myanmar in the aftermath of the devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck the country on March 28. The aid package also extends support to neighboring Thailand, which was impacted by the tremors.
The four nations are coordinating closely with ASEAN and other international partners to ensure the delivery of life-saving assistance. This contribution from the Quad comes in addition to India’s bilateral humanitarian efforts already underway in Myanmar.
In a post on X, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal affirmed India’s solidarity:
“India, along with Quad partners, stands with the people of Myanmar & Thailand in the wake of the March 28 earthquake. For Myanmar, alongside our bilateral aid, we’ve joined hands with our Quad partners to contribute over USD 20M in humanitarian aid & are coordinating with other partners, including ASEAN, to deliver life-saving assistance.”
As part of its immediate response, India launched Operation Brahma, a comprehensive mission providing Search and Rescue (SAR), medical aid, disaster relief, and logistical support to Myanmar.
On the sidelines of the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Myanmar’s Senior General Min Aung Hlaing and expressed India’s steadfast support.
“As the first responder, India stands with Myanmar in the hour of need and is ready to deploy more material assistance as needed,” said Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, adding that PM Modi also emphasized the importance of restoring democracy in Myanmar through credible elections.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is spearheading ground operations in Myanmar. Deputy Commander Kunal Tiwari, overseeing the mission, shared that a team of 80 personnel, four trained canines, and advanced rescue equipment have been deployed for SAR efforts.
As of Tuesday, India has delivered 625 metric tons of humanitarian aid and relief materials, reinforcing its role as a first responder and regional partner committed to stability and humanitarian support in its neighborhood.
